Perfect Gifts For Mums and Bubs

11 / 14 / 1711 / 4 / 17

gifts-for-mumIn the lead up to Christmas here are some perfect gifts for mums and bubs.

It’s no secret that when you welcome a new baby into the world, the focus is often entirely on them. While this is great, it can mean the mother gets forgotten in the process, and after the huge role she has played, she deserves to be showered with gifts!

Remembering Kids Birthdays

10 / 18 / 1710 / 18 / 17

kids-birthday-partiesFind out a great way for remembering kids birthdays.

As a busy mum of two (balancing the toddler craziness with a newborn), I’ve experienced that heart-stopping ‘OMG’ moment many a time. The one where I realise I have forgotten my nephew’s third birthday, along with my niece’s first birthday and have no gift!

Bamboo Bouncer

10 / 16 / 1710 / 8 / 17

bamboo-bouncerThis gorgeous bamboo bouncer from Bombol will grow with your child.

As I walked into our home the other day, I stopped and had to pause at how much Cassie really had taken over our apartment. There’s the doll’s house in one corner, the rocking horse, the kids’ kitchen, another corner full of puzzles and books and soft toys, the doll’s cradle and high chair, and just enough space to walk between it all – and that’s just our living room!

We had always managed it by getting rid of the toys she had outgrown and letting the new toys take over, but with number two now here, I began to realise this wasn’t going to work anymore, as there was no space for anything for the new baby! I went back through Cassie’s old baby stuff and made the hard decisions about what would stay and what would go, and decided to update plenty of things in the process. With her big sister around and in her face, I knew I needed a good bouncer I could put Vivi in, where she would be off the ground and not likely to be stepped on in the process. It can be tough having an older sister!

Many bouncers go up to 9kg, which is about the size Cassie was at just over 12 months. I wanted something to last a bit longer, which is when I came across the Bombol bouncer. It is the first bouncer that is certified for kids from birth to five years old, which means at the moment, both girls can use it. For Vivi, it’s a great place to sit up and view the world (aka, her crazy big sister), while for Cassie, it’s a great place to sit and watch some TV. I love that both girls can get use out of it at the same time, means it is worth the space it takes up.

The dynamic backrest means they can choose the position they sit in simply by shifting their weight, and with the newborn insert, it is super padded and comfortable. Cassie also loves giving Vivi a gentle push up and down, which saves me the trouble and gets Vivi off to sleep from time to time.

The other great thing about this bouncer is the way it looks. Available in Denim Blue and Pebble Grey, it blends in with the rest of the furniture in our house, which means it can well and truly grow with our family over time. Many other kids’ products on the market are full of bright, in your face colours that take over your house and eventually get tossed when the kids are sick of them.

I know this bouncer is going to get so much use over the years between both Vivi and Cassie – in fact we have five years of enjoyment to get out of it. We made a neat little space in our living room for it (while packing away some of Cassie’s toys into her room), to create the perfect space that doesn’t look like a kiddie tornado has swept through and taken over.

Storing Childhood Memories

9 / 6 / 178 / 26 / 17

smilefileIf you’re looking for the best way of storing childhood memories, SmileFile is the perfect solution.

I have to admit I have been feeling massively guilty lately preparing for the birth of my second daughter. I knew things would be different second time around, but finding out we were expecting our second little girl made life so easy, I didn’t have to think about much. With Cassie, there was so much excitement as I prepared her nursery, picked out clothes, chose a pram we loved, bought a carrier, decided which bottles we were going to use… every decisions was so special and monumental and each one took us one step closer to meeting our precious bundle.

With number two – we had everything we needed, except a room. She is going to be sharing with her daddy’s study, which meant a completely new nursery was out of the question. Still, I tried and bought some pretties to brighten up her space, some new clothes so she wouldn’t just be wearing hand me downs, and I even splurged on a new carrier, knowing I would be wearing her a lot more with Cassie to chase after. To be honest, I thought I was doing pretty well considering – and then I picked up Cassie’s baby book. Both of them.

That’s right, Cassie ended up with two books, because I had so much to share and nowhere to put it. Every detail was there, from the first time I felt her kick to the names we tossed around for her, my pregnancy cravings, photos, ultrasounds pictures, her birth story, meeting our family. Everything was so well documented, and that’s when my pang of guilt started to appear. I didn’t even have a baby book for number two, and close friends had even asked me where the ultrasounds pics were that they were getting every week with Cassie. I had slacked off, massively.

That’s when I came across Smilefile. I wasn’t trying to one up what I had done with Cassie to help my guilt, I was more just trying to give number two the same attention, without the need for multiple baby books in the process. Their pregnancy to pre-school Smilefile Kit was just the answer, and I was so excited when it arrived in the mail. It had everything, and I didn’t even have to think about it. It prompted me to add all the essentials, from documenting my pregnancy, to sharing the day she is born, and of course all the firsts. I was going to keep track of them all, just like with Cassie, and it was going to be lots of fun.

I was so impressed with everything that comes with the kit, yet you still run the show. Unlike baby books where you fill out all the details page by page, it is customised to suit your needs and how you want to use it. Basically you can pick and choose.

The Smilefile Kit comes with two little organza pouches for storing that first curl or tooth (cute!), along with a page of firsts you can fill out – and it’s one of the most extensive I have seen. Because it is simply kept in a folder as a separate page, I can take it out and stick it on our fridge to prompt myself to fill it out as we go – rather than a baby book that ends up under the couch, never to be found again. The favourites page is another cute one, full of things I would barely remember for Cassie, despite them meaning so much at the time, like her favourite game as a baby, and her favourite toy that she has now grown out of. It’s true that those early days do become a big blur. You think at the time you will remember everything and then life catches up with you.

Things get much simpler as the years progress with prompts to document the big things, like height, developmental milestones and a little bit of personality. This is great for busy mums like me who can feel all to easily daunted if there is too much to do – in general I would just forget it, but this is manageable.

Then there are the stickers – and to say I am a little excited by them is an understatement. They are the perfect way to stick a date and occasion on anything your little one brings from from daycare, with more prompts like first hand and foot print and first drawing to encourage you along the way. They can all be stashed away carefully in the folder provided for safe keeping and stored in the outer box that comes with it. The outer box is also big enough to fit your little one’s favourite bear or clothes that you can stow away to share with them in future years.

The whole system is so nice and easy, and you can simply stock up with as many sleeves as you need, without being restricted by a certain number of pages. My only regret now is that I didn’t start one off with Cassie two years ago…

Preparing for Baby Number 2

9 / 4 / 179 / 4 / 17

preparing-for-baby-number-2

Editor Flick Frankish shares her experience preparing for baby number 2.

I am sure you have all seen the meme. The one with the big, beautiful picture of the first baby’s nursery, with a comparison shot of number two in a cardboard box in the middle of a empty room. This is a little how it felt when we found out we were expecting our second girl. Surely there was no point doing a whole new nursery? I mean, we didn’t even have a whole room for her, she would be sharing with Daddy’s study for the first few months. But as time went on I started to feel a little guilty, plus there are so many gorgeous things out there for little girls, surely a little shopping wouldn’t go astray. Well a little shopping I did and here are some of my favourite finds when you are putting together a second nursery.
