Choosing what to name your baby isn’t always as easy as you think.

There are so many pretty girls names out there. In my days nannying and working at an outdoor sports’ centre for kids, I kept a mental checklist of names I liked (the well-behaved kids) and the ones I wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole (the not-so well-behaved kids) – you’d be surprised how many names I came across that seemed to carry a personality trait with them. The former list was thankfully more populated.

My best friend decided to do something special at her baby shower and share her baby’s gender with everyone. She filled up a giant black balloon with pink (yay, girl!) confetti, before popping it with her fiancé and showering all their family and friends in pink. The remnants remained on their porch for weeks to come.

When I was pregnant with my son, I wanted a special way to symbolise and celebrate my transition into motherhood. Having a blessingway meant just this, allowing me to form a support network of women who could help me through motherhood. Unlike a conventional baby shower, the blessingway (a traditional Navajo ritual) honours the woman and all that she has done to bring a new life into the community. It is a more heartfelt, sacred, meaningful celebration.
